Places to See & Eating Out

A few places worth visiting and their respective driving times from Casa Carlo:

Assisi - 2 hours               Perugia - 2.5 hours             Gubbio - 2.5 hours                Spello 1.75 hours

Rome - 3.5 hours            Bologna - 3 hours                Florence - 4 hours                Grotti di Frassasi - 1.5 hours

Conero - 1.25 hours       Ascoli Piceno - 1.5 hours      Castelluccio - 1.5 hours        Foce - 1.5 hours

The list is almost endless - Casa Carlo is ideally situated to drive to all these places - some of them would require an overnight stay but most are a day's drive with sufficient time for sightseeing.  In the house there's a huge information folder which gives ideas for places to visit and recommends overnight accommodation wherever we've tried it.

Eating Out

Restaurants in the immediate area (many of the restaurants are agri-tourismo - farms which have diversified with EU funding and almost without exception sell their own "country wine" which is excellent, largely without additives and very reasonable):

Vecchi Sapporo     Penna san Giovanni Tel: 0733.669319

Just to the right outside the Porta Marina town gate and down the slope at the side of the Porta Marina bar. Pizzeria with wide range of choices. House wine tends to be a fizzy red - unusual and not all that unpleasant. Pizzas 4-7 Euros. Weekends the antipasto buffet is good value; popular at weekends so best to book.  Closed Monday.

Le Querche     Monte san Martino                Tel: 0733.660207

Agriturismo run by Paulo and his Philippino wife. Closed Tuesdays.(?) Antipasto della Casa is good with borlotti beans, lentils with rocket as well as the usual meats and cheese. Excellent lamb on the grill, pizzas. Expect to pay 20-35 Euros for two inclusive of wine and water.Turn right out of the house and cross the bridge at the bottom of the road. About half a mile after the bridge the restaurant is signed on the right up an unmade road. Wind up this for about 2 miles and Querche is on the right just after a small farm complex on either side of the road.

Pippo e Gabriella        Sant Angelo in Pontano       Tel: 0733.661120

Head up to Penna and pass the town on your right. Keep on until the next junction, bearing right to Sant Angelo. Down the hill, cross the river bridge at Saline and climb up to Sant Angelo. Turn left at the T- junction and through Sant Angelo, keeping straight on at the turn to Gualdo. The restaurtant is just after the first sharp right hand bend. Canneloni and Crepe pasta is good. Veal chops are enormous and fillet steak delicious. Expect to pay 30-50 Euros for two all inclusive.

Antico Gusto              Penna San Giovanni Tel: 0733.669293

Turn right out of the house and down the hill to the river bridge. Take the steep left hand road just before the bridge and carry on past the mill, up the steep hill and the Agriturismo is half way up the second hill on the left. Excellent for Sunday lunch. Four courses with coffee, water and wine 22 Euros each.

Farfense      Santa Vittoria in Metanano              Tel (see card in folder)

Turn right out of the house , down the hill and over the river bridge. Take the first main turn to the left (well before reaching Monte san Martino). Down to the main road and turn left at the bottom. Take the road signed to Santa Vittoria on the right and up towards the old town . The restaurant is in an old monastery, very jovial host (Gianpierro). Prices medium - try the rabbit (Coniglio) or duck breast in balsamic vinegar if he has it. His wild boar tagliatelle is good. Ask for the local Rosso Vittoria wine.

Le Logge   Urbisaglia

From Penna take the road to Sant Angelo in Pontano and then continue down the hill to the SS78 at Passo Sant Angelo. Turn right at the traffic lights and continue for 2-3 miles . Urbisaglia is signed to the right and Le Logge is are just inside the north city gate. The town is worth a stroll as there is a well preseverved four turreted castle in the square.

La Logetta          Falerone                     Tel (see folder)

Go up towards Penna and turn right to Piane de Falerone at the first junction. Down to the Pian , turn left and take the next major left turn (acutely back) to Falerone. Falerone itself is a splendid town just to wander around with a nice little Roman museum. The restaurant is found by turning left at the little bollard at the T junction. The restaurant is about 100-200 yards off to the left and is signed. It is a bit of a concrete monstrosity but the views from the terrace of the Sybillinis at sunset are stunning. Friday night is fish night but be sure to specify that you want the fish meal when you book. The meal goes on for ever and costs about 25 Euro per head.

Smerillo has an excellent restaurant - popular with Italian families for Sunday lunch - next hilltop to Santa Vittoria.  Girasole is good for "stinko" up towards Penna, turn right at the top of the road and Girasole is about a mile and half down on the right hand side.

Beach Restaurants

At Porto San Giorgio there are a selection of good seafood restaurants.

Delfino Verde, Quadrifoglio, Figaro - to name a few we have tried (see picture at top - a lunchtime bowl of mussels!).

They will usually rent you an umbrella and sunbeds after the meal at a reduced price if you ask.
